Assistive Technology
Assistive technology is the device or devices used to allow children with disabilities to do more for them selves or to be more independent. These devices substitute for or enhance the performance of a physical or mental ability that is impaired. The overall goal of this increased access is to improve quality of life. As a small child this would mean access to toys that the child would otherwise not be able to play with. As the child gets older the technology would target access to toys, education, and self care. As an adult this access would then include employment.

Assistive technology refers to any device that can enhance a function that is impaired. The device would ultimately allow for greater independence or participation. Assistive technology devices are referred to as low tech or high tech. Low tech refers to simple non-mechanical devices such as pencil grips and book holders. High tech refers to complex devices such as computers.

This website will showcase assistive technology devices that will allow a child to access toys or educational materials. Remember the goal is to help our children through play. Assistive technology plays a vital role in attaining this goal for many children with physical impairments. http://www.pluk.org/AT1.html
